First, I have a random confession. I had NO idea that the movie What Dreams May Come starring Robin Williams was originally a book and I had no idea it was written by Richard Matheson! OK, now back to what you came here for…my review of the book I Am Legend!
I can’t believe I never read this book until now. And I call myself a lover of post apocalyptic fiction! I must be a phony. Ha! I Am Legend was written in 1954 and since then has been adapted many times as you can see by my list below:
- Comic Mini-Series titled Richard Matheson’s I Am Legend by Steve Niles and Elman Brown (1991)
- Nine part audio reading performed by Angus MacInnes on BBC Radio in 2006
- Four movie adaptations
- The Last Man On Earth in 1964
- The Omega Man in 1971
- I Am Legend (starring Will Smith) 2007
- I Am Omega 2007 (straight to video)
Thanks Wikipedia for that info! I Am Legend (Novel) Wikipedia
Synopsis:
Robert Neville may well be the last living man on Earth . . . but he is not alone.
An incurable plague has mutated every other man, woman, and child into bloodthirsty, nocturnal creatures who are determined to destroy him.
By day, he is a hunter, stalking the infected monstrosities through the abandoned ruins of civilization. By night, he barricades himself in his home and prays for dawn….
I listened to the audio version of this book and the narrator Robertson Dean was amazing. I felt like I was isolated, terrified and completely without hope as Robert Neville feels in this book. I thought that I knew the story having seen the Will Smith movie version in 2007, but I truly had no idea how different the book was. That made this so exciting! I was surprised at many of the plot twists and didn’t see the ending coming at all. This book was great, and I am really happy to add it to my list of Post-Apocalyptic favorites. Next time I am at the book store, I will be looking for a copy of I Am Legend to add to my bookshelf.
