I have to admit, I was very skeptical when I heard that one of my favorite books You by Caroline Kepnes was being adapted for TV. I was even more skeptical when I heard it was on Lifetime. No offense to Lifetime, but You is very twisted and has some pretty graphic scenes in it, which makes me question the network choice. In my opinion, to do it justice this would need to be on HBO, Netflix or Showtime. Some pay cable subscription which would allow it show all of the gritty details, without having to censor it.

Book Reviews: “You” & “Hidden Bodies” by Caroline Kepnes

However…once I saw that Penn Badgley was our JOE, I was all in. Penn has a way of playing a character who you want to trust, but you just can’t. He is sly and sexy and has great comic timing when he needs to have it. This makes him charming and dangerous when playing a character who is twisted like Joe. Having now watched the trailer for You multiple times, September 9th cannot come soon enough. This show looks sexy, creepy, romantic and scary all at once. The cast is made up of beautiful people including John Stamos! I copied an article below from IndieWire that I thought you would enjoy. But better yet, I’ve posted the trailer here for you to watch yourself. I dare you to tell me this doesn’t look amazing! Even if you haven’t read the book, which I highly suggest doing, you will want to watch this. Check it all out below. I’ve also added the link to purchase the book on Amazon or Barnes & Noble. Don’t forget there is also a sequel! Hidden Bodies continues the story and takes it even further down the rabbit hole of twistedness.

Indie Wire – Trailer for Lifetimes You

In case you were wondering where all your social media data is going, it’s probably being used by your local bookstore manager to make you fall in love with him. This is exactly the plot for Lifetime’s new series “You,” which stars Penn Badgley (“Gossip Girl”) as that bookstore manager and Elizabeth Lail (“Once Upon a Time”) as the aspiring writer who falls in love with him. The story is complicated by social media and obsession, focusing on the ways in which today’s technology can be harnessed to manipulate emotions.

In addition to Badgley and Lail, the series stars Shay Mitchell (“Pretty Little Liars”), Luca Padovan (“Newsies”), and Zach Cherry (“Search Party”). John Stamos will also be making a guest appearance. Greg Berlanti (“Arrow,” “Riverdale”) and Sera Gamble (“The Magicians”) serve as executive producers and wrote the first episode of the series. The series is based on Caroline Kepnes’ novel of the same name.

Here is the official synopsis for the series: “What would you do in the name of love? When a brilliant bookstore manager crosses paths with an aspiring writer, his answer becomes clear: anything. ‘You’ is a twisted love story about an obsessive, yet brilliant twenty-something who uses the hyper-connectivity of today’s world to make the woman of his dreams fall in love with him.”

The first season of “You” premieres on September 9 on Lifetime. Until then, you can check out the trailer for the series below:
