Book Summary from Amazon:
The next novel of psychological suspense and obsession from the authors of the blockbuster bestseller The Wife Between Us
Seeking women ages 18–32 to participate in a study on ethics and morality. Generous compensation. Anonymity guaranteed.
When Jessica Farris signs up for a psychology study conducted by the mysterious Dr. Shields, she thinks all she’ll have to do is answer a few questions, collect her money, and leave.
Question #1: Could you tell a lie without feeling guilt?
But as the questions grow more and more intense and invasive and the sessions become outings where Jess is told what to wear and how to act, she begins to feel as though Dr. Shields may know what she’s thinking…and what she’s hiding.
Question #2: Have you ever deeply hurt someone you care about?
As Jess’s paranoia grows, it becomes clear that she can no longer trust what in her life is real, and what is one of Dr. Shields’ manipulative experiments. Caught in a web of deceit and jealousy, Jess quickly learns that some obsessions can be deadly.
Question #3: Should a punishment always fit the crime?
From the authors of the blockbuster bestseller The Wife Between Us comes an electrifying new novel about doubt, passion, and just how much you can trust someone.

Jessica has a problem. Or I should say, multiple problems. She is broke, single, secretly paying for her disabled sisters medical bills out of guilt, and trying to keep up a false image as a successful makeup artist to keep her parents happy. While working a free lance makeup gig on some bratty socialites, she inadvertently see’s a text message on her clients phone for a highly paid psychological study. The study is at NYU, and is run by a highly regarded professor. Her client scoffs at the reminder text and tells her friend she plans to blow it off. Immediately, Jess see’s this as an opportunity to make some quick cash by posing as her client. What could go wrong? She shows up the next morning to the location she read on the text, and lies her way in. The trouble is, once she’s in, she can’t seem to stay away. Not only is the compensation amazing, Dr. Shield’s questions are engaging, introspective and make her curious about this mysterious doctors motivations. When Dr. Shield’s suggests they take the study a step further by ditching the computers and meeting in person, Jessica agrees with minimal hesitation. The study quickly takes on a new life when it begins taking place in the outside world with odd requests, and risky situational activities, Jessica begins to wonder how far Dr. Shield’s will go to collect her “data”. Furthermore, what does she plan to do with all of this information? Surely there has to be a reason she has Jess come on to a married stranger at a hotel bar just to see if he will remain faithful to his wife? She continually puts Jessica in very specific and sometimes dangerous situations testing her courage, and also her dedication. When Jessica begins to suspect that this study may be a cover for a darker purpose, Dr. Shield’s reveals the stakes are higher than ever for Jessica if she doesn’t comply.
An Anonymous Girl kept me turning the pages. I read it very quickly in order to figure out where the heck the story was going. Each chapter revealed a new layer, and many times, new characters. It kept me guessing, and even when I thought I had a clue as to what was about to happen, the next chapter made me rethink my theory all over again. I know, I know. You’re thinking, “Another book with Girl in the title??” That’s what my first thought was too. But this one is different. Very, very good different! An Anonymous Girl was written by the team of women who wrote The Wife Between Us. That book was released in October of 2017 and continues to be a smash success.
Bonus: I just read that this book is being developed into a TV series!! I love when I can see books come to life on the big screen. 🙂
Thank you to St. Martin’s Press for this Advanced Readers Edition of An Anonymous Girl.
